The story of Black Americans and the African Diaspora is often centered on the South. Our history is so tied up with the Civil War and the Jim Crow South that we don't often hear about the experiences of the Blacks in the north. In most of our schools, when we teach about the Black experience, it is focused on southern slavery, the Civil War, the Jim Crow South, and the Civil Rights Movement. And, while those are incredibly important aspects of our history, they are far from the whole story.
